Cult scooter brands
Scooters first started to real gain cult status in the 1960s - a decade of free love, funky fashion and... well, scooters. The "Mod" cult - which embodied an obsession with style, trend and future fashions - well and truly embraced the scooter as a symbol of its beliefs, with Lambretta and Vespa being the brands of choice. The functionality, simplicity and stylish design of the scooter were the reasons why the "mods" aligned themselves with the scooter. The scooter design was originally created by Corrandino DAscanio, who worked for Piaggio in the 1940s, and produced the first Vespa. Vespa grew to be a truly iconic brand, renowned all over the world for its pure, sleek and simple design which has earned international cult status. Soon after, rival company Innocenti released the Lambretta range of scooters, which gained similar notoriety. These two Italian brands completed dominated the scooter market, with films such as Roman Holiday spreading the scooter craze across the world. It is the exclusivity of certain Lambretta and Vespa ranges that have cemented their cult status and desirability. For example, in the three years the SX200 was produced, only 20,783 scooters were made, making it one of the most sought-after models ever. There is another scooter which could easily be classed as "cult" - the Honda Super Cub. Unlike Lambretta and Vespa, the Honda Super Cub could never claim to be hip. However, this cheap, high-performance model actually pummelled Vespa and Lambretta in the sales stakes upon its release. The Beach Boys paid homage to it in "Little Honda", and now the internet is littered with die-hard fans who have ensured that the Honda Super Cub, with its retro classic styling and robust frame, has earned real cult status.
